What Is PTSD Post Traumatic Stress Disorder | Quays Clinic of Hypnotherapy

PTSD

When an individual is in a dangerous situation, it is perfectly normal for them to feel scared. This is because fear is the body’s natural response in an attempt to protect itself from a potentially dangerous situation. PTSD is a mental illness that alters the way a person’s body and mind responds to danger. Typically, an individual who experiences post traumatic stress is prone to high levels of stress, depression, and anxiety even when they are not really in any sort of danger.

Soldiers Suffer From PTSD

This is a mental health condition that occurs after a person has experienced a terrifying and traumatic situation. Typically this is a situation that will have caused the individual to endure mental or physical pain/harm. While it was war veterans that brought this condition into the spotlight they are not the only individuals who suffer from PTSD. In fact, incidents including mugging, rape, being kidnapped, being tortured, or being held captive are other examples of situations that could lead to PTSD.

What Causes PTSD?

Naturally, doctors are still trying to learn more about post traumatic stress disorder and what causes it to occur. While there is no concrete evidence at this time some doctors believe that there is a link between genes and PTSD. Doctors also believe several inefficiencies play a role in the development of this mental condition. For example, research shows that individuals who lack a protein called Stathmin or a chemical in the brain called GRP are more prone to developing this condition.
There is no age, gender, or race requirement when it comes to who can develop this condition or who cannot. The truth is that absolutely anyone regardless of their personal details can develop this condition. If you have ever been in a traumatic or intense situation and are feeling more stress or paranoid than more, it may be a good idea to seek medical advice or assistance.
An individual who suffers from PSTD did not necessarily have to encounter or experience a dangerous situation. Some people develop the condition as a sympathetic natural reaction when a friend or family members goes through a traumatic experience. Furthermore, if a family member or friend suddenly passes away this can also cause an individual to develop post traumatic stress.

Ways To Treat PTSD

The main treatment options for individuals with this condition include psychotherapy, hypnotherapy, medication, or a combination of the three. The most important thing to keep in mind is that everyone is different and what treatment may have worked well for someone else may not work at all for you. For a lot of obvious reasons it is important that anyone with this condition seeks the assistance of a medical expert. Ideally they should also be seeking the help of a medical provider who has experience dealing with patients who have the condition.

What Is OCD Obsessive Compulsive Disorder | Quays Clinic of Hypnotherapy

Stress can manifest itself in many ways, and for some mental conditions are not due to stress at all. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is something that some people suffer from that causes them to be unable to live life normally. If you have seen the show Monk, you have seen the extremes, but not all cases are that severe.

What is OCD?

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, OCD, is a type of anxiety disorder that requires a person to perform rituals to relieve stress.

About OCD

OCD requires a person to have obsessions, such as impulses, followed by compulsions, which are rituals, which must be performed to relieve the obsession. There are many types of obsessions, such as germs causing significant damage so they must wash their hands repetitively. Others feel that if they throw something away, they will miss something that could cost them their life. This prevents them from being able to throw anything away.

Symptoms of OCD

There are many symptoms that can be manifested when someone has OCD. Some of the following can be seen in people who suffer from OCD.
  • Double checking lights
  • Double checking appliances
  • Tapping of objects
  • Washing hands repetitively
  • Repeating an action a specific number of times
  • Constant arranging of objects
  • Refusing to throw things away

Treatments For OCD

There are two main types of treatment for people who suffer from OCD. The first is Cognitive Behavior Therapy, or CBT. This is when a therapist will help you think of the worst possible things that could happen and then why it does not make sense that you are responsible for those actions. Finally, you will learn an effective way to handle your obsessive thoughts, without using the rituals.
The other treatment form is with exposure therapy. This is the most common in people who have severe OCD and it is used in connection with CBT.  A therapist will walk you through the process of dealing with your anxiety by not allowing you to perform the ritual. An example of this would be a person who is afraid they will die if they use someone else’s silverware. The therapist would take them to a restaurant and have them take a bite of food using the restaurant’s silverware. Then they will allow the person to sit with the emotions. They will discuss how the person did not get sick and die. The next assignment may be to take more than one bite.
If you know someone who suffers from obsessive compulsions, may require help from a professional. If the compulsions get in the way of one’s life, it may be impossible for them to deal with stressful situations without their rituals. For OCD UK suffers, it can be mild, or it can be severe, but if it causes a person to have trouble living life normally, it needs to be dealt with.

What Are Panic Attacks | Quays Clinic of Hypnotherapy

Panic Attacks and Anxiety

Many people have often heard of a friend or loved one who has suffered from or still suffers from panic attacks. They may think it’s a bogus disorder or simply something wrong with the mind. What they don’t know about panic attacks may actually surprise them as anyone can be the victim of one and at nearly any moment. But just what are panic attacks and how does one stop panic attacks either before one has gotten bad or once it is in full force?

What Is A Panic Attack?

It is the same chemical and physical response to a “fight or flight” situation except that you are in a normal setting where most people would experience slight nervousness but not fear. Anxiety causes them to experience this fear but at a level far beyond what most people would experience. Symptoms of panic attacks are often quite severe and often mimic those of a heart attack which is what many people think is happening when they see someone in a full blown panic attack. Symptoms include dizziness, shortness of breath, cold sweats, clammy skin and hands, and elevated heart rate. Many victims each year are taken to the emergency room thinking they are having a heart attack when in fact they are having a panic attack.
Although a panic attack can look and feel rather severe, these types of anxiety attacks are easy to alleviate if caught early. Often one just needs to breathe normally, relax, drink some fluids and try to think on something else. Since this is often hard to do when one is experiencing severe anxiety, they may need help from others to help relieve symptoms and return to normal breathing and thinking. If panic attacks persist or get worse, one may need professional help from a psychologist or therapist.

Help Is Available For Anxiety Attacks

For those who have had multiple anxiety attacks or have been diagnosed with a panic disorder, there are several ways professionals use in helping patients in overcoming anxiety attacks. For some, simply learning meditation and relaxation techniques to overcome triggers to their disorder will help. Others need extensive therapy to overcome the anxiety issues that keep them from maintaining a normal existence. Only for those too severe to maintain daily life will medication become necessary.
Panic attacks can be quite scary not only for those having the attack but also for bystanders or loved ones. Understanding what triggers the anxiety is key to overcoming anxiety attacks and once you learn what triggers panic attacks; you can begin to return to a life of normalcy. Having a panic attack is nothing to be ashamed of and in fact, many world leaders, athletes, movie stars and business professionals have succumbed to anxiety and suffered these types of attacks.
