Fear
Fear is part of the natural way in which
we live our lives. Fear is what kept early mankind from stepping off of
cliffs or going too near predatory animals. Many people have many
different kinds of fears and although some may seem odd to most of us,
many are nearly universal. But just what is fear and how does one
overcome fears to push beyond their normal limits. When reading about
fear on-line, according to the information provided by Wikipedia, chronic fear is an emotion induced by a
perceived threat which causes entities to quickly pull far away from it
and usually hide. It is a basic survival mechanism occurring in response
to a specific stimulus, such as pain or the threat of danger. The main
thing to note here is that the danger is perceived and may not be real.
Fear does not always make one cower.
Firefighters run into burning buildings for fear that something may
happen to someone else despite the fear for their own life which is in
danger at the moment. Fear often causes people to act which is often
considered brave and many times heroic as well.
What Are The Different Types Of Fear?
Fears can be born into us or developed
based on circumstances. Fear of death would be considered a natural born
fear into almost every human. For other people, the fear of fears may
be a fear of heights or fear of water. Those can often be geological in
nature or developed based on early childhood experience. For example; if
you were born near the ocean, you would be less likely to have a fear
of water due to early exposure. Of course, if the exposure was bad you
may be more likely to have a fear of water. Knowing about fear and how
it works in each individual is key to understanding what triggers fear
and often how one is able to overcome it.
You Can Overcome The Symptoms Of Fear
For most people, having fears does not
hinder normal life or the ability to carry out daily activities. A fear
of heights would not severely impact most people as they simply would
not get on planes or in tall buildings. There are many people who suffer
from fears so badly that it completely hinders their ability to carry
out simple tasks. For example: someone who had a severe fear of people
or even a woman who had a fear of men may not even be able to leave the
house or carry out normal relationships. For them, overcoming these
fears takes a step based therapy process that involves slow immersion
into their fears and using time to conquer them. You can also do the
same steps at home if you have fears you would like to conquer.
If you have a fear of snakes for example, you could start by simply touching a baby snake at a pet store and working your way up to holding one over the course of weeks or months. This may take a friend of family member’s encouragement at first but through knowing about fear and how it makes you act or react is the key to overcoming it and becoming stronger through it.
