All About Depression
Depression is a condition in which
patients feel sad, unhappy, down on their luck, or miserable. Some
people have these feelings for a short period of time while others may
have it for an extended period of time (severe depression). Clinical
depression is defined as a mood disorder in which sadness interrupts a
person’s daily life for weeks at a time.
The Causes Of Depression
Currently medical experts have not been
able to pinpoint the exact cause of depression. However, researchers are
on a theory that it has something to do with chemical imbalances in the
brain. Alternatively, it could also be brought on because of an issue
with your genes or because a stressful event took place. Then, again it
could be a combination of both.
Some patient’s diagnosed with depression
have a family history of depression while others have no family history
of it at all. Depression is something that can affect anyone, even
children. The following are an example of some of the things that
researchers and medical experts think are linked to depression:
substance and alcohol abuse, some medical conditions, some medications
(steroids), sleeping disorders and stress that occurs in life (breaking
up with partner, failing a class, losing a love one to death, divorce,
abuse, etc.
What Are The Symptoms Of Depression?
One of the main symptoms of depression
is seeing a change in the way you see yourself, life in general, and
even others who are around you. Usually, depression symptoms come along
with a negative outlook. Individuals feel as though every problem or
situation that occurs can only have a negative solution. Basically, they
cannot see the light in any situation no matter how small it may be.
Other common symptoms of depression include: irritability, problems
paying attention, significant changes in appetite, isolation, lack of
energy, guilt, sleep abnormalities, suicidal thoughts, and loss of
interest in things that are usually enjoyed. Furthermore, depression
does not always have to come with feelings of sadness it can also come
with feelings of anger. If there is severe depression present it is also
not uncommon to have hallucinations.
What Are The Different Ways To Overcome Depression?
There are a few ways that one can
overcome depression. However, if you have severe depression it is not
something that you are going to want to try and tackle on your own. The
basic ways to overcome depression include medications (antidepressants)
and talk therapy (psychotherapy). If you have mild depression one method
may work for you yet if you have severe depression it may require both
treatments to overcome. It will take time for you to overcome
depression, however, each day you will be one step closer. If you ever
experience suicidal thoughts or literally cannot function you will have
to be admitted into a psychiatric hospital.
