Hypnotherapy For Sport
The connection between the mind and body
has been studied and explored in every facet of life. In sports, this
is no different. The link between mental confidence and sports
performance is discussed regularly. Note that quite often; the
difference between a 1st and 3rd round draft pick
for a future NFL Quarterback is not a difference in physical skill but
rather a difference in mental confidence. Sports athletes have to be
every bit as tough mentally as they are physically. Overcoming a slump,
coming back from injury, improving performance, and even just overcoming
competition nervousness are mental blocks that no amount of training
can overcome. Sports hypnotherapy works to fill in the gaps that
physical training does not touch.
Hypnosis For Sport
Much like hypnotherapy is used to combat
tobacco use or to assist a psychologist in emotional issues,
hypnotherapy is used to assist athletes in overcoming a mental block or
to help them “visualize” their victory prior to the event. This gives
the athlete greater confidence and allows the individual to concentrate
on the sport and not whether or not they will succeed. In sessions
designed to overcome injury, the athlete uses hypnotherapy to mentally
prepare themselves to return to a sport that nearly crippled them much
like an accident victim could use the same therapy to assist in driving a
car. An athlete also uses hypnotherapy to overcome small performance
issues such as a basketball player who has poor free-throw shooting yet
exercises good mechanics. Note that none of these are one-time fixes but
rather a multiple-session oriented process designed to overcome the
root of the problem until the issues are resolved permanently.
Self-Hypnosis And Self-Visualization
Many of the most famous athletes admit
to practicing hypnotherapy and the process of self-visualization. Phil
Jackson, the coach of nine NBA championships and the coach behind the
success of 2 of the most noted basketball players in history Michael
Jordan and Kobe Bryant. His practice of daily hypnosis and teaching his
players “self visualization” was key to all of his championship seasons.
Both superstars admitted that his teachings were key to their success
on the court. Many professional baseball players included hypnotherapy
in their training including Hall-of-Famers George Brett and Rod Carew.
Famous heavyweight boxer Ken Norton used several hypnotherapy sessions
before is victory over Muhammad Ali for the championship. After his
defeat, Muhammad Ali began to use the same therapy himself. Famous
golfers including Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus have credited their
success in part to hypnotherapy and “self visualization”.
Hypnotherapy For Sports Performance
Hypnotherapy can be used in all aspects
of sports and for any competitor. Whether it is simply for overcoming
nerves, minor performance blocks, or even overcoming injury, you can use
hypnotherapy to better your sports performance. Any athlete could
benefit from a better mental edge in competition.
