Understanding Drug Addiction | Quays Clinic of Hypnotherapy

All About Drug Addiction

There are those who can use recreational drugs or prescription medication without ever having any issues or addiction problems.  However, for others this is just not the case.  Drug abuse may lead to problems at home, place of employment, school or in relationships.  These problems can leave the drug user feeling ashamed, helpless or even isolated.

How Does Addiction Begin?

There are several reasons that people may try messing around with drugs.  Some may do it because they are curious while others do it because of peer pressure.  Some may try it to cope with stress or depression while others may try it to have a fun time at a party or outing.  No matter the reason for trying it, drug addiction can and does occur.

What Is Drug Abuse?

Drug abuse is when a person compulsively seeks and uses drugs for their own satisfaction.  They are aware of the harmful consequences to not only themselves but those around them.  Drug abuse is not so much about how much drugs are taken or how often they are taken but it is more about what the exact consequences of the drug are.  What this means is that it doesn’t matter how much drugs are being consumed or how often they are being taken.   If the drug use is interfering with home life, school life, work or relationships, this is a drug addiction.

What Is An Addiction?

An addiction is being dependent on a substance. Some of the substances that people are most addicted to are narcotics. For instance, cocaine is one of the substances that many people find themselves addicted to. Though it is said that cannabis is non-addictive, many people become mentally addicted to marijuana.
Alcoholism is another form of addiction. Alcoholism develops overtime. Alcohol is used socially, then daily, then it becomes a full on addiction for some. Since alcohol is a socially and legally acceptable substance, most people think nothing of drinking. It is important to remember than drinking can become as must an addiction as hard level drugs for some.

Is There Help for Addiction?

There is always hope of treatment for addiction. Addiction treatment begins with detoxing the body of the substances, then learning new tools on how to stay away from the substances. When you get your body adjusted to no longer having the substance, you must learn how to mentally and emotionally live without the drugs. To do this, you will have to leave your old actions and mentality behind. When you mentally release any hold that the drugs had on you and decide to develop a new lifestyle opposite the old one, you will be able to live without substances or any other holds that were on your life.
