All About Cosmetic Surgery

Cosmetic Surgery

Cosmetic surgery, often called plastic surgery, is done for a variety of reasons. There are the “common” types of surgery that we see often such as breast implants, breast reduction, botox, tummy tuck and more. Then there are the ones that you rarely hear about. Ones like a dimpleplasty, which is where the surgeon gives you dimples. There is also a cosmetic surgery to give you a cleft chin, abdominal etching to give you a six pack, cankle liposuction and more.  Just about everything on your body can be altered if you choose to.

Why Do People Use Cosmetic Surgery?

Cosmetic surgery is not just for those who want to look better, or enhanced. It is also for those who need facial reconstruction after an accident or skin grafts after being burned. There is also those who were “blessed” with a large chest and they don’t want the attention, or the extra weight from those breasts anymore. For many, these surgeries are a lifesaver. For others, it is to help enhance their appearance.

Re-constructive surgery was being carried out in India by the year 800 BC. The first known person to have benefited from plastic surgery was Walter Yeo, a British Soldier. He received a skin flap, which was performed by Sir Harold Gillies in 1917.

What Are The Two Different Types Of Cosmetic Surgery?

There are two main categories when it comes to plastic surgery. There is Re-constructive, for those who have impairments from burns, traumatic injuries, abnormalities, infections, diseases, and cancers or tumors. Then there is cosmetic surgery. This is for those who want to enhance their appearance. Specifically, maintaining a normal appearance, restoring it, or enhancing beyond the average.

When a surgeon decides that (s)he is going to go into plastics (as the medical community calls it), they can choose a sub-specialty. These include burn, cosmetic, craniofacial, hand, micro, and pediatric. These doctors can chose to work in a hospital, or in a private practice of their own, or with other doctors.

While cosmetic surgery is something that can help enhance someone’s appearance, and even his or her life, it can also become an addiction. There is a condition called body dysmorphic disorder plays a large part in those who are obsessed with their appearance. Often times, people with this disorder do not see themselves in the mirror. What they see, does not match their actual image. These people will go on extreme diets, or have excessive cosmetic surgery to gain the appearance they envision.

Are You Considering Cosmetic Surgery?

  • Rhinoplasty
  • Breast Augmentation (Enlargement, Reduction)
  • Face Lift
  • Wrinkle Removal
  • Tummy Tuck

If you are considering a cosmetic surgery, you should consult with a few surgeons locally. Make sure the doctor has their credentials, and even check the credentials to make sure that they are legally able to perform the procedure desired. This research can save your life, as many have died from people portraying a doctor and performing procedures.
