Living With Irritable Bowel Syndrome | Quays Clinic of Hypnotherapy

All About IBS

Problems with the digestive system are never fun. These problems can cause a number of unpleasant symptoms that can make it difficult to participate in everyday activities. When people suffer from digestive issues for an extended amount of time, they often worry about things like cancer of the bowel. In most cases, however, these problems can be linked to a disease known as irritable bowel syndrome.

What Is IBS?

Irritable bowel syndrome, also known as IBS, is a condition that causes trouble with the large intestine. Some IBS symptoms include severe constipation, diarrhea, abdominal pain, bloating, gas, and mucus in the stool. These symptoms can be similar to bowel cancer signs, which is why it is common for people to worry when they have IBS. IBS is a very common disease. It affects many people but only a small number of those people report unmanageable IBS pain.

Eating For IBS

By making changes in one’s diet, they can greatly reduce their IBS symptoms. The safe foods for IBS are typically on the light side. Some of these foods include lactose-free dairy products, oats, rice, eggs, potatoes, salads, lean meats, fish, citrus fruits, and berries. Drinking a cup of green tea each day can also improve IBS symptoms greatly.
There is also a large list of foods to avoid on an IBS diet. Some of the foods that someone with IBS should limit or eliminate completely include full-lactose dairy products, whole wheat pasta, wheat bran, garlic, broccoli, cauliflower, sweeteners, beans, onions, carbonated beverages, caffeine, chocolate, and red meat.

Controlling IBS In A Nutshell

Unfortunately, there is no cure for IBS. Oftentimes, the symptoms will disappear or become less severe, but they will eventually return. Doctors can prescribe bile acid binding agents for people who are experiencing severe symptoms. Other people are usually recommended to take anti-diarrheal medications as needed. Other than that, patients are just encouraged to live a healthy lifestyle with an IBS friendly diet.

When To See A Doctor

It is important to see a doctor if any of the IBS symptoms occur. Although IBS is typically not severe, these symptoms can also be a sign of a more serious condition. A doctor will want to run tests on the patient to ensure that there is not another problem. Patients should also see their doctor if the IBS symptoms are making it difficult to perform daily activities.
Irritable bowel syndrome is a disease that can be either very easy to handle or extremely disabling. By learning about IBS, patients can spot the signs and know when to see a doctor. Although the thought of a “chronic illness” can be terrifying, it is important to remember that IBS can easily be controlled with a few simple lifestyle changes.
