What is Nutrition?

Nutrition is the study of how food works in our body.  It is the source of energy for our body and is also the medium for how the nutrients work in our bodies.  The most important nutrients that our bodies need to survive are proteins, fiber, carbohydrates, minerals, water, fats and vitamins.  One of the important facts about nutrition is that you should eat foods according to rainbow colors. Nutrition data shows that the more colorful your foods are the more important nutrients your body will receive.

If you are in search for nutritional information, there are several places online that you can locate this information.  While it is important that you count calories you also need to keep track of other things such as protein, carbohydrates, fat and fiber.  It is not difficult to find certain information on nutrition on everything from processed foods to fresh produce to fast food.

Wolfram Alpha

DailyBurn and MyFitnessPal
There are two other useful sites with amazing features.  With DailyBurn you can find food, obtain USDA info on raw foods, make your own recipe creation and track additional minerals and vitamins.  MyFitnessPal lets you create not only your own meal but your own recipe as well.  You can also find raw foods and verify information dealing with nutrition.

Nutritional Facts

Nutrition facts are listed on every label of food.  This is called the nutrition facts label or the nutrition information panel.  This label is required on the majority of packaged foods throughout many countries.

In the U.S. the nutrition label tells you the percentage that is recommended to be met.  It is recommended that you consume an average 2,000 calories per day.  The Daily Values are used for everyone except for foods meant for babies.
