What Are Panic Attacks | Quays Clinic of Hypnotherapy

Panic Attacks and Anxiety

Many people have often heard of a friend or loved one who has suffered from or still suffers from panic attacks. They may think it’s a bogus disorder or simply something wrong with the mind. What they don’t know about panic attacks may actually surprise them as anyone can be the victim of one and at nearly any moment. But just what are panic attacks and how does one stop panic attacks either before one has gotten bad or once it is in full force?

What Is A Panic Attack?

It is the same chemical and physical response to a “fight or flight” situation except that you are in a normal setting where most people would experience slight nervousness but not fear. Anxiety causes them to experience this fear but at a level far beyond what most people would experience. Symptoms of panic attacks are often quite severe and often mimic those of a heart attack which is what many people think is happening when they see someone in a full blown panic attack. Symptoms include dizziness, shortness of breath, cold sweats, clammy skin and hands, and elevated heart rate. Many victims each year are taken to the emergency room thinking they are having a heart attack when in fact they are having a panic attack.
Although a panic attack can look and feel rather severe, these types of anxiety attacks are easy to alleviate if caught early. Often one just needs to breathe normally, relax, drink some fluids and try to think on something else. Since this is often hard to do when one is experiencing severe anxiety, they may need help from others to help relieve symptoms and return to normal breathing and thinking. If panic attacks persist or get worse, one may need professional help from a psychologist or therapist.

Help Is Available For Anxiety Attacks

For those who have had multiple anxiety attacks or have been diagnosed with a panic disorder, there are several ways professionals use in helping patients in overcoming anxiety attacks. For some, simply learning meditation and relaxation techniques to overcome triggers to their disorder will help. Others need extensive therapy to overcome the anxiety issues that keep them from maintaining a normal existence. Only for those too severe to maintain daily life will medication become necessary.
Panic attacks can be quite scary not only for those having the attack but also for bystanders or loved ones. Understanding what triggers the anxiety is key to overcoming anxiety attacks and once you learn what triggers panic attacks; you can begin to return to a life of normalcy. Having a panic attack is nothing to be ashamed of and in fact, many world leaders, athletes, movie stars and business professionals have succumbed to anxiety and suffered these types of attacks.
